One Of The Most Difficult Circumstances I’ve Ever Had To Deal With Is Not Having Any Maternity Health Insurance
I am in such a troubling state right now, all due to the fact that I do not have maternity health insurance. A year ago, we were overjoyed to discover that my wife was pregnant. However, at the time, she was just out of college and I was working as a freelance graphic artist. I know it’s terrible, but we haven’t had insurance since school because we could simply not afford it Although this little bundle of joy was a surprise to both of us, we felt such huge upwellings of joy when we knew we were pregnant that words cannot describe our feelings.
But right away, the insurance issue was difficult. First of all, we didn’t know if we could acquire insurance since my wife was already pregnant and it would count as a pre-existing condition. But we had no idea where we might find the necessary information. My wife proposed that we search for private health plans online, but we were not sure where to find reputable websites or how to find plans that offered maternity health insurance.
The few that we could find had astronomically high deductibles and seemed like a scam more than anything. This was a very trying situation, so we took our queries to my wife’s cousin, a doctor, who mentioned that it was possible to make an arrangement with a hospital. The deal was for a set amount of money for labor and delivery, but this would not include complications, which could cost us a lot more money.
It was extraordinarily frustrating and there was no one we could turn to. There was a woman who lived down the street who we knew had had issues finding infertility insurance, but even she did not know what we could do. Eventually, we managed to track down a website that gave clear, worthwhile information that helped us understand exactly what our situation was and how we could get through it.
It’s months later now, and we have a lovely baby boy. We take a lot of happiness in our child, but lament that it took us such a long time to find the information that would have helped us. Insurance is a complicated issue, but there should be more methods to find out what your options are. As I snuggle my brand new child, it is impossible for me to feel that we are the final ones who will struggle with this same issue.
