An Accident May Befall You At Any Instance, So You Need Short-Term Disability Insurance

Short-term disability insurance came to the forefront of my mind when, Last winter, my husband went out to get the mail, slipped on a patch of ice and went down. His ankle was hurt pretty badly and he was suffering for several days. We were quite relieved to learn that his ankle was sprained and not broken like we thought. We breathed a huge sigh of relief that he wouldn’t have to deal with expensive medical procedures and be out of work for a while.

We were struck with the sober realization that as we didn’t have any short-term disability insurance, a real broken ankle could be a significant issue. My husband performs contract work, and as such does not have a steady employer who can provide health insurance. It dawned on us that we should begin the search for a private insurance plan that included short-term disability insurance. The problem with this lofty goal was that there were no instructions detailing how one should look for private insurance plans.

There was talk of contacting a local insurance agent in order to get information about various plans. We realized our error as we endured an hour and a half learning about cabin insurance even thought we were direct to the agent that we did not have a cabin. Of course, this was not what we desired to hear and departed without signing anything. It should have been obvious, but finding something that the layperson could intuitively understand was harder than we expected. Our investigations took us to the internet, but there were so many websites out there that we had a difficult time determining which ones were worth looking at and which ones were scams.

One feature that we also demanded in an insurance plan was maternity health insurance which was even tougher to find than the short-term disability insurance. I wasn’t preparing to be pregnant in the near future, but when it did happen, I wanted to be as prepared as I could, which meant having insurance. We could not figure out why it was so amazingly hard to pay for a private plan that had both maternity coverage and short-term disability coverage.

This became a gigantic source of frustration because we just wanted a simple way to sort through the different plans with some advice and tips on how to find the one right for us. I wonder how many other families there are out there who work in non-traditional jobs who might not have insurance plans offered by their workplaces. Although it took quite a while, our research bore fruit when we uncovered a website that explained in great detail what each available plan offered to us.
